All About Project Lead the Way

By: Audrey Hale

Is there a class you heard of but wanted to know more about? Well I’m here to tell you about one of the classes we have at Union Park Middle School, it’s Mr. Thude’s Project Lead the Way!

Project Lead the Way is taught by Mr. Thude for his 3rd, 5th and 7th period class. Project Lead the Way is all about engineering, stem, and experiments.  Right now the students are learning about design briefs and are currently working on architecture. Some things his students have worked on is learning how to plan, draw blueprints, and build a real catapult from scratch. Mr. Thude has been doing this class for about 4 years and has enjoyed teaching his students.

“I recommend all students to join PLTW because in PLTW we achieve a better understanding for the future even if the students want to become an engineer or not, it will help their future academics and understanding of life.” If you didn’t know Project Lead the Way was started to create more leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, which is also known as STEM.

If you have never been in PLTW, here are some things you should know about the class. Engineers are very important to the society we live in and we wouldn’t have the technology we have today. If you would want to become something in the engineering field, then PLTW is the class for you!

That’s all for my interview about the Project Lead the Way class we have at Union Park Middle school! If you’re ever passing by Mr. Thude’s class go ahead and say hi! If you would like to be interviewed please contact me at 4804122107@students.ocps.net! Have a great day!

Art Class

 By: Dayanara Tinajero

Art is very exciting. What I mean is that art is a way to use your imagination and creativity. There is no way to be bad at it, all you have to do is move your hand and do what you like.

Mrs. Wilson is the art teacher, and will be telling us what she is planning to do with her students, also some big projects. Mrs. Wilson says “We are currently working on our zentangle project in Art 1 and 2 where we are learning about the elements of art, line. In digital art we have started studying color theory and why color choice is important in your work. We created cookie color wheels where students mixed red, blue and yellow icing to create a complete color wheel. Digital Art is about to begin their first big project creating patterns digitally in different color schemes. Art 1 will continue to study the elements of art while Art 2 will begin to study the principles of design with projects that will involve painting, building, and creativity.”

Above are pictures of the optical illusion project completed the first week of school, and Art 2 did the swirls.

LIA Helps Those Affected By Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas

Ms. Boucourt worked with students in her class, Latino’s in Action, and was able to get supplies such as water, canned food, diapers and cleaning supplies. Students in her class advertised this and collected supplies before school. They then packed up the supplies and they were taken to the Orlando Executive Airport.

Below you can see some pictures of the process: making signs, collecting items outside of UPMS, packaging the items and then taking them to the airport to get delivered to the Bahamas.
